International Restrictions and Import/Export

Avoiding international customs & logistics issues
IoT technologies, often have dual use purpose restrictions. This classification means that a technology product becomes considered as being capable of being used as part of a military solution. When this happens, the export and import of such items become subject to various Government regulations. These will at the very least delay any delivery and in many cases may result in the items being impounded.

Regional certifications
The requirements differ by region and country, and also whether or not radios are included. Different countries/regions also have specific requirements based on any mobile/cellular service provider that may be preferred.

We can manage all of these risks, to make sure that we are all aware of them before a project starts, and we can plan mitigations for delays, or design in different technologies, to negate any restrictions, due to import/export or certification issues.

Installation & Ongoing Maintenance

It’s important to plan all installation and ongoing maintenance carefully with your in house staff, and any preferred installation/maintenance organizations or personnel. It will always be our preference to use your existing and trusted resources.

Where that is not possible we will work with you to source the best third party organization to manage such services. We do have a well established network of third-party installation and maintenance organizations, and we can work with you to select the best fit for you, dependant on geography and technology requirements.

Technical Validation & Proof of Concept

The Technical Evaluation of all parts of an IoT Solution should be tested and validated at every stage in a project. That tactic should deliver known technologies, with known technology interfaces, and protocols. It will also highlight issues, that were previously unknown, and may result in a change to the overall design. Importantly this is likely to be the lowest cost and lowest risk point in a project, at which such “unknowns” are identified.

The Proof of Concept (PoC) is when the Stakeholders and Project Team really understand what is being delivered. This is when “Change Requests” will be made. Remembering that if the Proof of Concept does not meet and support the needs of the Stakeholders, then the Project is doomed to fail.

The PoC is the first time that a quality review of the IoT Solution can really be made. It’s the first time that those involved may have seen anything other than a Powerpoint or Marketing Videos. The PoC should be an essential part of every project.
The PoC should be a “live” ongoing “example” and used by all, to update each other on what you are doing and to “picture” the end result, in as much it is possible to do that, at any given time.

In an ideal environment our IoT solution would consist purely of opensource software and open standards based hardware. However much of your design will be constrained by existing skill-sets, and supplier commitments.

Our philosophy is very much aimed at avoiding vendor lock-in, so that you have the ability to choose and make your own determinations about your long-term strategy.

on-premises "cloud"

You might want your sensitive data, to be routed to your on-premises cloud, and customer facing data to a commercial cloud, that has the ability to scale on demand?

commercial cloud

We can configure the on-site hardware to route data or machine metrics to multiple commercial (and on-premises) clouds simultaneously. Or even route one type of data Azure, and another type to AWS.

opensource cloud

Deployed by thousands. Proven production at scale. OpenStack is a set of software components that provide common services for cloud infrastructure.

hardware with the widest range of global certification.

agnostic

Whatever your requirements in terms of hardware, we will work with you to find the right platform.

avoiding lock-in

We suggest using an opensource development environment, to avoid being locked-in to any specific manufacturer’s products.

product shortages

We recommend using containers, so that you can install your edge applications on a wider range of manufacturers products.
